EFT (EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES)
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
One of the main tools I use in my practice is called EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, or more commonly referred to as tapping. It is easy to learn, incredibly effective, and requires no special equipment. EFT was born when a Stanford-trained engineer named Gary Craig took a course in TFT, or Thought Field Therapy.
Created by psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan, Thought Field Therapy used acupressure tapping on certain meridians to alleviate everything from headaches to phobias. Dr. Callahan had had a client, referred to as “Mary,” with a severe water phobia. Mary struggled with simple everyday tasks like taking baths, and even felt nervous when it rained. This fear had been with her since she was a baby. He tried everything from traditional psychology to help her, including therapy sessions by his swimming pool that he believed would desensitize her. The best he could get her to do was dangle her feet in the water, which she did with great anxiety. She often described how she felt the anxiety in her stomach. Dr. Callahan had learned about the meridians used in acupuncture and knew the stomach meridian end points were under the eyes. On a hunch, he tried an experiment and asked to tap under her eyes as she described the fear. Much to his amazement and hers, she described the phobia as gone and ran toward his swimming pool. Concerned she would drown, he stopped her, and she said she knew she couldn’t swim. She stepped into the pool up to her knees and knew for sure her fear was gone. This was over thirty years ago and she remains fear-free.
Dr. Callahan knew he was on to something important! He began experimenting with other clients and found meridian tapping effective for not just phobias but for alleviating the pain of traumas and even physical conditions. He created a series of algorithms, or tapping recipes, where you tap on specific points in a specific order. Each condition has its own algorithm.
Gary Craig learned TFT and was astounded with the results. He also saw new possibilities. What if, instead of following a specific algorithm for various conditions, you used just one tapping sequence that stimulated most of the major meridians? He thought for sure you would encounter the energetic block that was causing the problem and be able to alleviate it.
Based on one of TFT’s trauma algorithms, he created EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT was designed to be so simple, it could be learned in a few minutes. He traveled around the country teaching and doing demonstrations. EFT was proving to be incredibly effective in alleviating stress and pain.
Focus on a problem. Focus on the feelings that problem brings up. Break the problem down into small, specific pieces. Measure the intensity. Tap. Measure the intensity again. Keep tapping and testing the intensity until the feelings are resolved.
You could be crying, experiencing real sorrow, only to be laughing fifteen minutes later. This could occur after thoroughly tapping on that problem.
